Tijdens het Kaboom Animation Festival in Utrecht start een nieuwe reeks Animatie Conversaties. In samenwerking met NAPA organiseert DAFF een serie gesprekken tussen animatieprofessionals waarbij ingezoomd wordt op verschillende facetten van het maakproces. Het eerste gesprek, tussen Joseph Wallace (VK) en Jamie Caliri (VS), staat in het teken van stop-motion animatie.
Beide makers hebben een lange staat van dienst binnen de animatie en stop-motion in het bijzonder. Ze regisseren en produceren muziekvideo’s, korte films en titelsequenties voor dramaseries en speelfilms. Caliri’s werk bestaat o.a. uit de eindtitels van Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004) en de stop-motion scènes in The Little Prince (2015). Daarnaast is hij de ontwikkelaar van het softwareprogramma Dragonframe, dat beschouwd wordt als de industriestandaard voor stop-motion animatie. Wallace regisseerde o.a. een bekroonde muziekvideo voor het nummer ‘Edith Piaf’ van de Amerikaanse band Sparks en animeerde delen van Edgar Wright’s documentairefilm The Sparks Brothers. Zijn meest recente korte film Salvation Has No Name is geselecteerd voor de internationale competitie van Kaboom 2023.

Joseph Wallace is a BAFTA Cyrmu nominated animation director, writer and producer. He has made over a dozen short films since 2007, which have won awards, received Vimeo Staff Picks and screened at festivals around the world. His music video for Sparks, which was named one of the ten best British animated music videos of all time by Anim18, led to Wallace creating stop motion sequences for Edgar Wright’s documentary feature ‘The Sparks Brothers’. The film premiered at Sundance and Wallace’s segments were described as ‘hilarious’ by iNews and ‘cinematic’ by Guardian’s Mark Kermode. Wallace’s new short ‘Salvation Has No Name’, supported by BFI, France Televisions and Czech Film Fund is Exec Produced by Maisie Williams and starring Money Heist’s Itziar Ituño. The film premiered at the Edinburgh Film Festival 2022, was long-listed for a BIFA and a BAFTA and won the Grand Prix as well as Best Director award at Animage, Brazil in 2022.
Jamie Caliri is a stop-motion animation director as well as the co-creator of Dragonframe software. A life-long tinkerer and entertainer, Jamie loves to make films that are technically challenging, esthetically innovative, and emotionally captivating.
Over his years in the industry, Jamie’s won many directing awards including four Annies and an Emmy for his animated title sequences and commercials. Some of his noteworthy projects include the end titles for the film Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, The stop-motion title sequence for Showtime’s United States of Tara, The stop-motion music video for The Shin’s The Riffle's Spiral and paper, stop- motion TV spots for United Airlines.
Stepping into longer-form projects, Jamie worked as the creative director and DP on the acclaimed stop-motion segments of The Little Prince (2016).
Jamie now lives in Southern California where he continues to design Dragonframe software with his brother Dyami.
